Carthage Jail

Carthage Jail
The bedroom where Joseph and Hyrum were killed.
The original door is still there. There was a very special feeling here, and I do have more pictures, but I don't want to post them all on here. You'll have to go there yourself.

Joseph and Hyrum

The history we learned while here and the feeling we felt were unforgettable. This jail was a home to a family of 9. The people in jail stayed with the family, and ate with the family. Well, at least Joseph and those with him did. There is a cell upstairs that they could lock people in, but on the night of the martyrdom, it was very hot. The man usually had them sleep downstairs when it was that hot and humid, but he knew people wanted to kill them, so he gave them his and his wife's' room upstairs, next to the cell, but more comfortable. The wife and 2 or 3 of the kids were home at the time the mob came running into the home. There are still 2 bullet holes in the door. An interesting side note, Dan Jones, who was in jail with Joseph and the others, but Joseph had sent him over to the court house the morning the mob came, was the first mayor or Manti. I just found that out tonight.
